The Mile High Jazz Band Association formed in 2001 as a nonprofit corporation to support the MHJB and its subgroup, the Millennium Bugs (jazz combo), promote live jazz performance in northern Nevada, educate the public about jazz, and enrich the cultural life of the community. Tues., January 12, 2010 - MHJB presents "Cool Jazz in January" at Comma Coffee - 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., Admission: $5 admission, FREE age 18 and under

Swing into the new year with the Mile High Jazz Band at "Cool Jazz in January," a big-band event with vocalist Sheryl Adams at Comma Coffee, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. General admission is $5 at the door, and is free for age 18 and under. Come early for dance instruction, 6:00 to 7:15 p.m., $5 additional.

The 19-member Mile High Jazz Band will play hot and cool jazz in the spirit of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, and more contemporary styles from their vast repertoire. Performances are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Fri., January 15, 2010 - Jazz Extravaganza VII - Big-Band Jazz Times Two! - Mile High Jazz Band and Carson High Jazz Band, in an annual, intergeneration jazz event to benefit the CHS music program, at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 8 p.m.

It's "big-band jazz times two" when the Carson High Jazz Band and the Mile High Jazz Band (MHJB) present their seventh annual joint concert, the Mile High-Carson High Jazz Extravaganza, on Friday, January 15, 2010, 8:00 p.m., at the Brewery Arts Center (BAC) Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street, Carson City. The concert is a benefit for the Carson High Band programs.

Tickets prices are $12 general admission, $10 students and seniors, and $5 for youth age 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Carson High Band members or at the door. For information, call the MHJB at 775-883-4154 or see milehighjazz.com.

The Extravaganza, sponsored by the MHJB Assoc., Brewery Arts Center, and the Carson City Band Association (Band Boosters), will include two big bands, vocalist Sheryl Adams, combo performances, and a grand finale combining the forces of both big bands. "I am pleased that the MHJB has been asked to support the high school jazz band again," said David Bugli, MHJB leader and pianist. "The high school music ensembles are talented and goal-oriented, and they deserve the community's help and encouragement. I'm looking forward to another round of intergenerational musical swing!"

The Carson High Jazz Band attends and competes at jazz festivals each year. They were invited to play for the 2009 Carson City Chamber of Commerce holiday party at the Railroad Museum. The band also performed at former Governor Guinn's inauguration, the Greenhouse Garden Center music series, and "Winter Wine and All That Jazz." Directed by Jarod Sorum, the band is a zero-hour class at Carson High School designed to teach students about jazz - the music that has affected America in so many ways. The MHJB, a professional big-band ensemble, plays regularly in northern Nevada, including monthly performances and quarterly Jazz and Poetry events at Comma Coffee. They sponsor an annual Jazz Festival in Carson City in August. MHJB appearances are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Treat your Valentine to a Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts, an evening of sweet and hot big-band music at Comma Coffee on Tuesday, February 10, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Sun., February 14, 2010 - Mile High Jazz Band Presents
Valentine's Dance at Sharkey's
Benefit for Family Support Council


Mile High Jazz Band Assoc. presents Lucky Diamond and The Gents o' Jive, a '20s and '30s hot jazz band, at Sharkey's Casino, 1440 U.S. Highway 395 North, in Gardnerville, on Sunday, February 14, 2010, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. The Roaring '20s Valentine's Celebration includes favorites for dancing, from the 1920s to today.

Admission is $5 per person, and all proceeds benefit the Family Support Council of Douglas County. Special Valentine's Day Dinner before the dance, including Duet of Filet Mignon Oscar, complete with Crème Brûlée or Frangelico Chocolate Mousse, is $25 per couple.

Lucky Diamond and The Gents o' Jive has been performing since the grand opening of the Silver Legacy Resort Casino in 1995. Hired by Circus Circus, initially for three days, the act stayed for 18 months. Since then, they have appeared for private parties and corporate events in the Reno-Tahoe area, including the Cadillac Ball in Truckee, and New Year's Eve at Sharkey's.

The Gents are Dan Lancaster on sax, clarinet, and flute; John Dykstra on trumpet and flugelhorn; Jimmy Vermillion on keyboard; Joe La Chew on guitar; and Mark Ashworth, also known as Lucky Diamond, on drums. Band leader Mark Ashworth said "from Fats Waller's 'Ain't Misbehavin'' to Billy Austin's 'Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby,' Lucky Diamond and the Gents o' Jive deliver…and how!"

Mile High Jazz Band Assoc. presents composer and multi-instrumentalist Colin Ross, with Mig O'Hara on vocals and guitar, playing from their huge repertoire of original and traditional jazz, boogie-woogie, blues, swing, rockabilly and Americana on Saturday, March 27, 7:30 p.m., at Sarah Winnemucca Hall in the Aspen Building at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Parkway, Carson City, Nev. Instruments include an astounding array of keyboards, guitars, folk instruments, and more!

Sat., April 10, 2010 - The Millennium Bugs perform for the "Family Fun Night of Music," presented by Carson Sertoma. The event runs from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at the Carson Senior Center. The Millennium Bugs will perform at 7:15 p.m. Also on the program are Large Bills Accepted (ragtime), Chorus of the Comstock (barbershop ensemble), and Bob Carroll (host of KUNR's "Music of America" show). Event involves tri-tip dinner, drinks, auction, finger food, dancing, door prizes, raffle prizes, desserts, and fun for the whole family. Mile High Jazz Band Presents April Jazz Anniversary Concert

Come hear the sensational big-band sound of the Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams and guest vocalist June Joplin on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Comma Coffee in Carson City. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building.

Mile High Jazz Band, which formed in 1997, has been playing monthly at Comma Coffee since April 2001. To celebrate the nine-year collaboration between the band and the coffee house, anniversary cake will be served to patrons at the April 13 performance. General admission is $5 at the door, and free for age 18 and under. Swing-dance instruction, 6:00-7:15 p.m., is $5 additional.

The Mile High Jazz Band includes four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, and vocalist. They will play about twenty tunes from their ever-expanding repertoire of selections in the style of Basie, Ellington, and more contemporary composers and arrangers. Thurs., May 27, 2010 - Veterans Reunion Farewell Dinner - Mile High Jazz Band perform at Circus Circus in Reno for the 55th annual reunion of World War II veterans ("China Burma India Veterans All West 2010 Reunion"). While the Mile High Jazz Band takes a little break in July, the "second Tuesday of the month" tradition continues at Comma Coffee with The Jazz Guys presenting entertainment from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. in Comma Courtyard. The Jazz Guys is made up of MHJB members Gil Linsley (trumpet and flugelhorn, see picture), Dan Lancaster (saxes, clarinet, flute), and George Worth (bass). They are joined by Mark Ashworth (drums), and Kenn Pettiford (keyboard).

Jazz! Carson City Music Festival
August 2010 is Jazz Month in Carson City

The summer of 2010 sizzles as Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses, and jazz lovers proudly continue the annual August jazz festival started in 2004. This year, performances will be held at multiple venues in Carson City, and will feature more than 100 musicians in over 20 bands. Main events are scheduled for August 20-22, with lead-in performances starting August 8. All events are free, except for a ticketed Jazz Brunch.

Outstanding regional and international jazz artists will play for you at Third Street, the Farmers Market, Comma Courtyard, Firkin & Fox, B'Sghetti's, the Brewery Arts Center, the Legislative Plaza and Capitol Amphitheater, Glen Eagles, and other venues in Carson City.

Performers include Delta Wires, Reno Jazz Orchestra, Mile High Jazz Band, New World Jazz Project, Colin Ross, Ken Davidson Trio, Blues Assault, The Champagne Singers, Warren Walker Group, Jazz Guys, Ake-Roth-Laurain Trio, Two Plus quintet, George Hanepen & Dallas Smith, First Take, Dave Fritz, the Johnny Hamlin Trio, JB Gravity, Carson High Jazz Band, and more!

A different youth group will be featured each week of the festival. Strazz jazz and fiddle string ensemble will play on Sunday, August 8, at the Legislative Plaza, the Carson High Jazz Band on Sunday, August 15, at the Capitol Amphitheater, and the BAC to Broadway Kids on Saturday, August 21, at the Curry Street Pop-Up Park next to the Farmers Market.

The Jazz Brunch on Sunday, August 15, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at B'Sghetti's and Plan b, presents the incomparable vocal stylings of Latisha Lewis and her quartet, with Rocky Tatarelli on sax, Dave Kubin on keyboard, Mick Valentino on guitar, and Bill Heise on drums. The brunch buffet includes specialty breakfast and lunch items, mimosas, coffee, desserts, and gratuity. Buffet in the dining room, drinks in the lounge, music throughout! The Mile High Jazz Band will perform "November Jazz," a program of big-band jazz on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under. The program, two days before Veterans Day, will include "American Patrol" as a tribute to veterans. The band will play tunes in the style of Basie, Ellington, and more contemporary composers. Millennium Bugs perform Nov. 20, 2010,
with Ruby Mountain Symphony in Elko Nevada

The Millennium Bugs will perform on the Ruby Mountain Symphony concert on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at the Elko Convention Center on a program called "It's About Time." David Bugli has written a 15-minute work, also called "It's About Time," that will be premiered by the Millennium Bugs with the Symphony, under the direction of the Symphony's conductor, Henrik Jul Hansen, on the first half of the program. The new work is a composition which, in a non-rigorous way, covers some of the evolution of jazz and pop music in the twentieth century and make reference to "time." On the second half of the program, the Millennium Bugs will perform a couple of tunes in a standard combo format. Performing in the combo are Howard "Speedy" Garfin, on alto sax, soprano sax, clarinet, and flute; Tom Styker on harmonica; David Bugli on piano; Nathaniel Hamer on bass; and Lee Warner on drums.

"Stocking Up"

The Mile High Jazz Band and vocalist Sheryl Adams will be joined by Rita Geil and other award-winning poets for an evening of big-band jazz and poetry on Tuesday, December 14, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., at Comma Coffee. The theme of the evening, "Stocking Up," relates to the holidays and to life.

Poets/readers include Rita Geil, Terri Breeden, Krista Lukas, Susan Sara Priest, Tracy McQuay, and Lee Warner. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City.

General admission is $5 at the door, and free for age 18 and under. Swing dance instruction, 6:00-7:15 p.m. is $5 additional.
