Musician and educator John Shipley will present a lecture-demonstration with slides and audio samples on the history of Rock and Roll, concluding with questions and comments from the audience and the raffle of an electric guitar. The talk will be on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, 7:00-8:30 p.m., at Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City. Admission is free.

This special event, part of the 2013 "Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival," is for music fans and musicians of all ages who want to learn about the era of Rock and Roll. It is presented by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and the Brewery Arts Center with public funding through a grant from Nevada Humanities. The raffle prize, a Squires by Fender electric guitar, is provided by the Reno Guitar Center.

About John Shipley

Picture of John Shipley

John Shipley, an innovative jazz pianist, conductor, arranger, songwriter, producer, and recording artist, was a founding member of the groundbreaking Jazz-Fusion group Hiroshima (Epic Records). He is musical director for the Motown session musicians "The Funk Brothers," who were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this year. They played on more than 150 number one hits from 1958 to 1973 - more than the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and Elvis combined.

In addition to performing and recording, Shipley teaches piano and other music courses at Western Nevada College. The August 6 lecture is based on his popular college course, The History of Rock and Roll, redesigned for a general audience. It explores rock music's performers, producers, recordings, performances, and cultural identity. The lecture will introduce the audience to the musical styles, voices, and performers from the early blues to the 1980s.
