The Carson High Jazz Band (pictured at right) attends and competes at jazz festivals each year and has performed at community events throughout Carson City. Directed by Bill Zabelsky, the band is a zero-hour class at Carson High School designed to teach students about jazz - the music that began in America and has spread throughout the world. The Carson Middle School Jazz Band is directed by Nick Jacques, who also plays tenor sax in Mile High Jazz Band.

The Mile High Jazz Band, a professional big-band, plays regularly in northern Nevada, including monthly performances and quarterly Jazz and Poetry events at Comma Coffee. They sponsor the annual Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival in August. Mile High Jazz Band appearances are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Here is a letter printed in the Feb. 1, 2015, Nevada Appeal

Students able to showcase musical talents thanks to community

On Jan. 27, the Mile High-Carson High Jazz Extravaganza XII performed at the Carson City Community Center, and for the second year in a row, the Royal Blue Jazz Band of Carson Middle School participated in this fundraiser for the Carson High and Carson Middle School band and orchestra programs.

For those two hours, you get to see a new generation of student musicians performing with high-caliber, experienced musicians. These kids, from preteen and up, are being rewarded with the opportunity to showcase their efforts, and everyone there can experience how much their musical educations matter, and how the community can continue to drive them forward. Some of the jazz pieces show advanced, mature skills for such young musicians. Rather than just providing a venue or a time slated for children to perform, the Jazz Extravaganza showcases exceptional talent. The entire music community is essentially harnessed to get our future musicians pushed forward to the next level.

Although the combined benefit has been around for more than 12 years for the benefit of Carson High School, from 2013 until 2015, for two years, CMS has been able to participate. Due to the decision by Ellie and David Bugli as well as Bill Zabelsky, faculty of Carson High School, Carson Middle School now has two years behind its belt of joining in. Not only is it a fundraising exercise, but it's really a night of music and jazz, where the ability and talents of the directors of these two incredible bands essentially take on compositions and music well over their expectations of a High School and Middle School student concert.

Nick Jacques of Carson Middle School Jazz Band selected, among others, "All Blues" by Miles Davis, "Go Tell It on the Mountain," arranged for jazz and a Latin jazz piece, written by Dizzy Gillespie. Bill Zabelsky of Carson High School selected for his group exciting pieces with solos of many of his students, including "Blue Train" by John Coltrane. The evening rounded off with Mile High Jazz Band, and following, a grand finale of all the bands on stage, about 60 musicians total, grouping for "Blues in Hoss Flat," featuring solos from the pros and the students alike. You get the impression, when you see all the players working together, that the music community is positively and successfully investing their tine and efforts with the kids to really show what we can accomplish as a group.

It is astonishing to see middle school students playing some pretty hard selections, which they had only had been practicing for three weeks. I asked Nick Jacques how he selected the right songs for the kids, and he stated he looks at the band's individual members, and picks something that challenges them, pushes them forward, and also fits their special abilities. The selection must be fun, educational, not too easy or hard, and not too long. The kids know what good music sounds like, because they listen to a lot of songs and performances in their jazz band class. The additional part of CMS's Jazz Band program is that it is an extracurricular activity, meeting before school starts, so the children are volunteering their time. Jacques is also to be taking the Royal Jazz Band to competition this year for the Reno Jazz Festival in April.

In addition, some excellent opportunities for the students have been around for about two academic years now. This year, a Jazz Workshop was held at Carson Middle School this weekend, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council written by David and Ellie Bugli. Three professional musicians offered workshops last Saturday, Jan. 24, at Carson Middle School to about 21 students, and received personal, hands on practice in scales and chords, improvisation, and rhythm.

We owe a lot in the community to these kids, their parents, and the talent of these amazing band directors, as well as a huge thanks to the Mile High Jazz Band.

"Jazz & Beyond" Volunteers Planning
for 2015 Music Festival

Photograph of xxx

The "Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" held a kick-off meeting for organizers and potential volunteers on October 7, 2014, at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Conference Room, 1200 S. Carson St., Carson City. This year's festival is scheduled to run from Aug. 7 to 23 at multiple locations in Carson City.

"Jazz & Beyond is a homegrown event that celebrates the talent of our region and relies on many local citizens who donate their time and effort," said committee co-chair David Bugli, president of the Mile High Jazz Band Association. "Your participation on the organizing committee can help make this, our eleventh year, a great success. Volunteers, sponsors, and advertisers help us make the event one of the best in the area, and keep most performances admission free."

The festival, which began in 2004, is presented by Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses, and music lovers. Most festival events will be downtown. Last year, the Jazz & Beyond Festival featured 60 performances and over 100 performers. Beyond jazz, it included bluegrass, blues, rock, and more. Free events, including Sunday afternoon concerts on the grounds of the Legislature, attracted large crowds. Information about last year's festival can be found at http://milehighjazz.com/jazzcarsoncity.htm.

For information about volunteer positions, sponsorships, ad rates, and festival details, see JazzCarsonCity.com or call the Mile High Jazz Band Association at 775-883-4154.

Drummer Lee Warner Dead at Ago 60

Photograph of Lee Warner

I have the sad duty to report that Lee Warner, long time drummer with the Mile High Jazz Band and the Millennium Bugs, died Monday morning, May 11, 2015. Lee, one could say, was a driving force in the Mile High Jazz Band. I had the privilege to work with him since 2005 in various capacities: drummer, teacher, narrator, poetry reader, etc. Three or so years ago, when he knew he had the brain cancer and had his operation, he exhibited an inspiring recovery, but he knew it was likely the cancer would come back. Undiminished in his energies, he took on many projects and kept up his skills and positive outlook. If others did not take inspiration from him these last few years, it's probably because you did not know him as deeply as others.

RIP - Saxophonist Gerry Wright

Photograph of xxx

Gerry Wright died in California on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. after a brief illness. There will be a memorial service at the Lifepoint Church, 1095 Stephanie Way, Minden, Nev., Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. Family requests that you please bring any photos you have of Gerry playing his sax.

Gerry was a member of the Mile High Jazz Band from 2000 to 2009 and mostly played baritone sax in that group. After his retirement from playing that big instrument with the band, he continued to play in the area. He fronted a number of shows with some top-rank northern Nevada talent at the old plan:b microlounge and contributed performances to the Jazz & Beyond festival with singer Latisha Lewis. He frequented the local jazz jams at plan:B, Sassafras, and other locations playing fluid solos on the soprano saxophone.

Gerry Wright came to Carson City in late 2000 from Oxnard, CA. His experience in Oxnard was as a member of a big band, The Swing Shift, in which he played lead tenor for almost 20 years. During those years he fronted two small groups of six to seven men and vocalist, back when there was a lot of work. Being so close to Los Angeles, he got chances to play with some "heavy people." He learned a lot, despite no formal training. He once remarked, "I just love to play. I have often said that when I go, I want it to be with a horn in my hands." Many of us got to enjoy his playing, within the last year or two.
