to support the MHJB and its subgroup, the Millennium Bugs (jazz combo), promote
live jazz performance in northern Nevada, educate the public about jazz, and
enrich the cultural life of the community.

big-band music by the Mile High Jazz Band with singer Jakki Ford at Living
the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Carson Street, in Carson City on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Admission is free, donations welcome.
Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts features the 17-member band playing jazzy versions of
favorite love songs for Valentine's Day, and other swinging, big-band selections.
Highlights of the evening include "The Way You Look Tonight," "Prelude to a Kiss," and
"It Could Happen to You." The performance is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada
Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

David & Friends, a jazz combo led by David Bugli, will perform for the Wine Walk on
Saturday, March 2, 2019, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Nevada Artists Association
Gallery (inside the main Brewery Arts Center building, 449 W. King St., Carson City).
Join Carson City Downtown Business Association businesses for one of the most fun
social events held in Downtown Carson City. On the first Saturday of every month,
participants can stroll to over 35 locations pouring wine, providing entertainment,
and offering special deals for wine walkers. At the end of every wine walk, at 5:00 p.m.
sharp, there is a raffle in Alatte Wine and Coffee Bar at the Carson Nugget with many
prizes donated by the downtown businesses. Raffle tickets are provided with your paid
entry into the wine walk. Did you have a great experience at one of the locations?

band will be joined on vocals by Jakki Ford. The poetry readers are Rita Geil (our
official Poet Wrangler), Krista Lukas, Susan Sara Priest, Timothy Rhodes, and Amy Roby.
Admission is $5 general and free for age 18 and under.

Sixteenth Annual Jazz Extravaganza

It's "big-band jazz times three" when the Mile High Jazz Band, Carson High Jazz Band,
and Carson Middle School Jazz Band present the 16th annual combined Jazz
Extravaganza concert, on Tuesday, March 19, at 7:00 p.m., in the Bob Boldrick Theater at
the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City. The Extravaganza
is sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and the Carson City Band Association
as a benefit for Carson City school instrumental music programs.
Tickets prices are $10 general admission and free for youth age 18 and under.
Tickets can be purchased in advance from Carson High and Carson Middle School music
students, at the Nevada Day Office (716 N. Carson Street), online at MileHighJazz.com,
or at the door. In addition to tickets, ads in the concert program are available,

This year, the Extravaganza will feature three big bands, vocalist Jakki Ford,
and an intergenerational combo performance. The traditional grand finale, combining
the forces of all the musicians, will be “A Little Blues, Please,” by Sammy Nestico.
Refreshments and raffle prizes will be on sale in the lobby.
"We're so happy to perform with the high school and middle school jazz bands again,"
said David Bugli, Mile High Jazz Band leader and pianist. "These award-winning student
ensembles are impressive and deserve community support."
The Carson High Jazz Band, directed by Bill Zabelsky, and the Carson Middle School
Jazz Band, directed by Nick Jacques, attend and compete at jazz festivals each year
and perform at community events throughout Carson City. The bands are zero-hour classes
designed to teach students about jazz - the music that began in America and spread throughout the world.
The Mile High Jazz Band, a professional big-band, plays regularly in northern Nevada,
including monthly performances and quarterly Jazz and Poetry events in Carson City.
They present the annual Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival each August.

Due to some last-minute changes in plans, the band will feature singer Cindee LeVal. She
sang with the band on a regular basis until mid-2017. Cindee comes from a musical family. Both of her
parents were professional musicians (trumpet players). She played flute from elementary school
through college at Cal State Hayward, earning top honors in competitions, and sang in a musical
variety group in High School where she met her husband Scott. Cindee has enjoyed singing both in
church and with local jazz bands and combos. We thank her for joining us on such short

The Mile High Jazz Band will perform an all-instrumental program highlighting the talents of
several soloists from the band at Living
the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Carson Street, in Carson City on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, from 7:30
to 9:30 p.m. Admission is free, donations welcome. Dinner and late night menus are available.
The band will play big-band favorites, including "Love for Sale," "Gorilla Man Blues," and
"Count Bubba," plus tunes recently added to the band's repertoire, including an arrangement of
"Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges' classic, "Jeep's Blues." Featured
soloists include Bill Melendres and Joi Cerveri on trumpet, Derek Fong and Jacob Richetta on
tenor sax, Rich Davis on alto sax, Liz Eubanks on bari sax, and Don Smaltz on trombone.
The performance is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the

Summer 2019 Music Camps
June 11-14 and June 18-21, 2019
The Mile High Jazz Band and the Capital City Community Band will jointly sponsor this
summer's Music Camps at Carson Middle School, June 11-14 and June 18-21, 2019.
The Jazz Ensemble
Camp (8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. each day) will be put on by the Mile High Jazz Band for students entering
grades 6 through 9. Students will learn swing, rock, and Latin styles, as well as an introduction
to improvised solos. No previous jazz band experience is necessary.
The Pops Concert Band (10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day) will be put on by the Capital
City Community Band for students entering
grades 6 through 9. Students will learn fun movie themes, marches, and pops songs. This camp
is open to anyone who has been a member of their school's band program.
Both ensembles will be featured on a showcase concert on the Minnesota Street Stage
on Sunday, June 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The cost is $50 for one ensemble, or $90

MHJB Performs on Four-band Showcase Concert

The Mile High Jazz Band will perform on a free band showcase concert on Sunday, June 23, 2019, on the
Minnesota Street Stage (BAC Levitt Series stage) at the Brewery Arts Center. The event starts at
5:00 p.m., and MHJB's set will start about 6:30 p.m. MHJB is under the direction of pianist
David Bugli.
Prior to the MHJB's performance, the
Summer Pops Band, the Capital City Community Band, and the Summer Jazz Camp Band, will
perform on the same stage. Those three groups are under the direction of Nick Jacques,
band instructor at Carson Middle School.

MHJB Association Annual Meeting

The Mile High Jazz Band Assoc. Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2019,
at 4:30 p.m. at 191 Heidi Circle, Carson City. The meeting will be followed by a potluck
dinner. This will be an opportunity to elect trustees for the Board, review accomplishments
of the previous year, and review plans for the up-coming fiscal year (July 1, 2019, to June
30, 2020).

Millennium Bugs play for 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival

The Millennium Bugs will be featured on the 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival on Thursday,
Aug. 1, 2019, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dangberg Home Historic Park, 1450 Hwy 88, Minden,

The Millennium Bugs, a jazz combo associated with the Mile High Jazz Band, have been
playing a great variety of jazz styles since the late 1990s. They performed for the
Carson City Preservation Coalition/Historical Society, Olympic Torch Relay Ceremony
in Carson City, Carson City Music Club, Westview block party, Camel Race Day in Virginia
City, Carson Nugget showroom, Carson-Tahoe Hospital Foundation, Carson High Prom,
BAC Beer Tasting, weddings, receptions, and parties. Although some of the personnel
has changed over the years, the group is still inspired to play songs from the "Great American
Songbook," inspired by the tradition of spontaneous improvisation. The members are
Rocky Tatarelli, tenor sax; Wayne Theriault, trumpet; Don Smaltz, trombone; David Bugli,
piano and trombone; George Worth, bass; and Clay Cooper, drums.
Please bring your own seating. No dogs allowed at events; legitimate service
animals only. All events at the Dangberg Home Historic Park are free to attend unless otherwise
noted, and all are free for youth 16 and younger.

Millennium Bugs Play for Ice Cream Social

The Millennium Bugs will play for the Carson City Historical Society's Ice Cream Social
on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foreman-Roberts House in Carson City.
The group has played for the Ice Cream Social each August for several years. Come on out
and enjoy some free music, and learn a little bit about the Carson City Historical
Society, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this September. There is a cost for the
ice cream.
This event is part of the Jazz & Beyond Music
and Art Festival.

Mile High Jazz Band to Celebrate Count Basie's 115th Birthday

The Jazz & Beyond Festival all came about because the Mile High Jazz Band wanted to celebrate
the 100th anniversary in 2004 of the birth of band leader and jazz pianist Count Basie. MHJB will
be celebrating his birthday a day early (he was born on Aug. 21, 1904) with a free concert at 7:30 p.m.
on the McFadden Stage, located between 2nd and 4th Streets, off of Carson St. Bring a lawn chair
or enjoy some of the limited seating in the McFadden Plaza.
This event is part of the Jazz & Beyond Music

The program, "Autumn Big-band Jazz," presents the 17-member band playing Woody Herman's
version of Early Autumn, Charles Mingus' Good Bye, Pork Pie Hat, and other big-band tunes.
The band will be joined by Jakki Ford on How High the Moon, Jumpin' East of Java, and
memorable and popular songs.
The concert celebrates Harmony for Humanity as part of World Music Days, an annual global
event affirming the ideals of tolerance, friendship, and shared humanity, inspired by the life
and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl. The performance also commemorates National
Arts and Humanities month, a coast-to-coast recognition of the importance of culture in America.

The Mile High Jazz Band Association Association will hold its Annual Membership Get-Together
on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the home of David & Elinor Bugli, 191 Heidi Circle,
Carson City. Members, future members, friends, and guests are welcome. Admission is free.
Main dish is provided - please bring a side dish or dessert to share.
We will open with a performance by David & Friends, a jazz combo associated with the band,
featuring Derek Fong on sax, David Bugli on keyboard, George Worth on bass, and Clay Cooper
on drums. Members will elect Board members to fill open terms. We will review accomplishments,
and hear about plans for 2020.

"Night Lights" at Comma Coffee

The Mile High Jazz Band will be joined by singers Jakki Ford and June Joplin, and by several
award-winning poets and readers, for an evening of big-band jazz and poetry on Tuesday, December
10, 2019, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at CommaCoffee.com.
Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building in
Carson City. General admission is $5 at the door, and free for age 18 and under.
The theme of the evening, "Night Lights," relates to the holidays and to life. Poets and readers
are Rita Geil, Wayne Carlson, Lynda Pitts, Susan Sara Priest, Amy Roby, Timothy Rhodes, and Paul
St. Amant. Pianist and band leader, David Bugli, said, "'Night Lights' encompasses a broad variety
of humorous and serious selections, some based on holiday themes, for the enjoyment of people of
all ages."
