Photograph of Betty Carter Film series: "...But Then, She's Betty Carter" - Thurs., Aug. 4, 2011 - 8:00-10:00 p.m. - Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall - 511 West Kings St.

A film by Michelle Parkerson -- 1980, 53 minutes -- This lively film is an unforgettable portrait of legendary vocalist Betty Carter, one of the greatest exponents of jazz. Uncompromised by commercialism throughout her long career (she died in 1998), she forged alternative criteria for success - including founding her own recording company and raising her two sons as a single parent. Parkerson's special film captures Carter's musical genius, her paradoxical relationship with the public and her fierce dedication to personal and artistic independence.

Rita Geil, writer and connoisseur of jazz and film, will introduce the movie and lead a discussion afterward. Another jazz film, about pianist/composer Mary Lou Williams, will be shown Thursday, Aug. 25.

Beverly Colgan, harp, and Joe Venuto, vibraphone, present a delightful, inventive program, brought to you by the Reno Philharmonic. These pros not only make exciting music together, but they will show you how their instruments work and answer your questions!

Beverly Colgan never thought that she’d be playing jazz and bluegrass on the harp! By profession she is Principal Harpist for the Reno Philharmonic, Nevada Opera, and Reno Chamber Orchestra. When she discovered what an incredible sound the harp and vibraphone make together, she began arranging pieces for the combination. Beverly is a graduate of Indiana University and the San Francisco Conservatory of music.

Born and bred in New York City, Joe Venuto studied classical music at the Manhattan School off Music and jazz on the road with the famous Sauter-Finnegan Orchestra. A professional recording musician and arranger, he was named a Most Valuable Player by the New York chapter of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences). Today he lives in Nevada, where he has begun recording CDs featuring his jazz arrangements. His jazz trio can be seen in the movie Hard Eight, starring Gwenyth Paltrow.

Boland and the Stragglers Jason Boland & the Stragglers (country) - Aug. 17, 2011 - 8:00-11:00 p.m. High Sierra Brewing Co., 302 N. Carson St.

Making neo-traditionalist country music that brings to mind the rowdy glory of David Allan Coe, Jason Boland and his band uprooted from their Oklahoma home and made their splash in Texas. Their blue collar country caught on with locals, and their backroad experiences led to hedonistic tracks like "Drinkin' Song" and "When I'm Stoned." They have released several recordings. Musicans are Jason Boland (lead vocalist, guitar), Roger Ray (pedal steel, lead/rhythm guitar), Brad Rice (drums/backing vocals), and Grant Tracy (bass).

Photograph of a brass quintet (horns only) Discover Music: Brass - Tues., Aug. 23, 2011 - 7:00-8:30 p.m. - Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street

The Discover Music Program is comprised of musical ensembles of two to five musicians, who travel to selected Washoe County and regional elementary schools to perform child-friendly music programs. These are designed to give elementary school children a close-up look at symphonic musicians, music and instruments through performances, demos and participatory activities.

Discover Music brings knowledge and expertise to local schools, through entertainment and education. By exposing them to fun and quality music, a child may develop an appreciation of music, and become motivated to play an instrument.

The program currently employs a brass quintet, a percussion trio and a harp-vibraphone duo. In the 2007-2008 school year, the Discover Music ensembles performed in 28 schools, as well as the Washoe County Senior Services Center, thereby reaching more than 15,000 children and seniors. In addition to Washoe County School District, we were able to accommodate Carson City, Truckee, Fernley, Gardnerville, and Yerington. These are schools with limited access to live performances, and our groups were received with great enthusiasm.

A film by Joanne Burke - 1990, 60 minutes
Pioneering Black American composer-arranger-pianist Mary Lou Williams is one of the most remarkable figures in the history of jazz. In this authoritative film, lively interviews with Williams, Dizzy Gillepsie and Buddy Tate interweave the musical and personal elements of her dramatic life. At the height of her career, she dropped out of music to help drug-addicted musicians in Harlem, making a triumphant comeback fifteen years later. A spirited tribute to Williams' indelible contribution to American culture, narrated by Roberta Flack.

Rita Geil, writer and connoisseur of jazz and film, will introduce the movie and lead a discussion afterward. Another jazz film, about singer Betty Carter, will be shown Thursday, Aug. 4.
