The Mile High Jazz Band Association formed in 2001 as a nonprofit corporation to support the MHJB and its subgroup, the Millennium Bugs (jazz combo), promote live jazz performance in northern Nevada, educate the public about jazz, and enrich the cultural life of the community. Member benefits include mailings, discounts on admissions, and invitations to special events, plus the satisfaction of helping big-band jazz to thrive!

To book the Mile High Jazz Band (big band) or Millennium Bugs (jazz combo), call 775-883-4154.

About the Event

Scott Faulkner and Danna O'Connor will moderate a panel discussion/public dialog on jazz musicians and the cultural context of their performances in Northern Nevada during the past 60 years. Panelists will discuss the historic background, personal experiences and perspectives, and the Jazz Oral History Project, as well as demonstrate musical styles by performing together. Panelists are

  • Ron Legg (saxophone, orchestra leader, educator)
  • Gerry Genuario (drums, band leader)
  • Bob Barnes (woodwinds, arranger)
  • Dickie Mills (trumpet), and
  • Dale Hampton (trombone).
A slide show of historic local and international musicians who performed in the area will greet attendees (audience) on arrival, and opportunities for one-on-one engagement will continue at an informal reception after the panel presentation. The forum will be recorded by a videographer to preserve the discussion and extend it to a broader audience by cablecasting on public access television and Internet, and by donating copies to the Nevada Historical Society and to public libraries in Carson City and Reno. This project adds a "living history" component to the eighth annual Jazz! Carson City 2011 music festival.
